He attended Howard University, Washington, D.C., where he earned his B.A., with honors, in 1975. He received his J.D. in 1978 from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio.

Admitted to the Bar, state of Ohio, in 1978.

Served with the United States Marine Corps from 1978-1982 in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, HQ Bn. 2nd MarDiv, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
